What is PNEC.pro?

PNEC.pro is a user-friendly tool for professionals dealing with assessment of surface water quality. The tool calculates local, watertype specific no-effect concentrations (PNEC) of copper, nickel and zinc, based on biotic ligand models (BLMs).

Data input

PNEC.pro processes local surface water monitoring data and automatically selects the most reliable calculation method for the available monitoring parameters. Minimum data requirement is DOC, and additional parameters, such as pH, Ca, Mg and Na can be used to improve the reliability of the predicted value of PNEC.

Output and graphs

PNEC.pro generates local PNEC, RCR, and the probability that local concentrations exceed local PNEC. Frequency distributions of monitoring parameters and PNEC are shown, and a statistical summary of the sample set is produced.

The scientific concepts and the validation procedures that were used in PNEC.pro were published in a scientific journal.

What are Biotic Ligand Models?

In contrast to generic environmental quality standards, BLMs incorporate chemical speciation in the assessment of ecotoxicological risks for aquatic species. BLMs are recognized as a second-tier assessment method to determine site-specific risks based on bioavailability of heavy metals.

Is water quality sufficient?

PNEC.pro is a fast and user friendly tool that provides quick screening of monitoring data. However, a detailed and reliable analysis should be performed with the validated, "full" BLMs. These will provide the possibility to construct species sensitivity distributions (SSD) for a large range of aquatic species, and enables a detailed analysis of the ecosystem. These full BLMs, including chemical speciation calculations, are fully automated and validated (PNEC.power).

A detailed analysis of various water types, on a geographic and seasonal scale, were carried out for a large number of water types in the Netherlands, covering the requirements of the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
